Vera Institute of Justice

As the pandemic swept the country during the summer of 2020, I recorded audio interviews with people involved in the criminal legal system for the Vera Institute of Justice. Interviewees reflected on how the pandemic impacted them and their families. Their stories reveal the emotional and physical toll the virus took behind prison walls.

Using audio from a panel discussion held on the 25th Anniversary of the Nuclear Threat Reduction Act of 1991, I told the story of “Project Sapphire.” The secret U.S. mission smuggled 600 kg of bomb-grade uranium out of Kazakhstan to keep it from the hands of terrorists. The covert operation was the first success of the bill championed by Senators Sam Nunn (D-GA) and Richard Lugar (R-IN), to fund efforts to secure and destroy Soviet weapons of mass destruction.
