<image:title>Video - ON OUR OWN TERMS: MOYERS ON DYING EPISODE 1</image:title>
<image:caption>Living With Dying Most of us want to die at home, free of pain, surrounded by the people we love. But a great many people will die in a hospital. Bill Moyers undertook this four-part, six-hour PBS series to launch a conversation about dying and how to improve end-of-life care. As a field producer, asking people to share their final stories was one of the most difficult and most rewarding assignments I’ve ever had. “You want to follow me until I take my last breath?” asked one woman as she agreed to let my camera crew into her hospital room, “But you know, I’ve never done this before.” I filmed in hospitals, hospices and homes, capturing some of the most intimate and candid conversations ever shared with a television audience. The series was nominated for a 2001 Emmy Award. September 10, 2000. (Photo: Stephen Muehleisen)</image:caption>

Using archival photographs, Lyndon Johnson’s secret recordings of phone calls, and Moyer’s personal memories, I produced an intimate essay that was nominated for a 2009 Emmy Award for best feature in a news magazine. <image:title>Video - American Beat</image:title>
<image:caption>As a Carnegie Visiting Media Fellow, I worked with Blue Chalk Media to document how the Boise Police Department is supporting refugees. Since the 1970s, thousands of refugees from countries such as Iraq, Congo, Burma, Bhutan, Afghanistan and Somalia have started new lives in Idaho. The short documentary weaves together three stories: the groundbreaking efforts of Boise police officers to integrate and mentor refugees; the determination of a former Iraqi translator for the US Military who dreams of becoming a police officer; and the story of Boise, itself, showing refugees from war ravaged corners of the world that, in America, a united community can conquer tragedy and hate. <image:title>Video - NEXT WAVE: FACES OF ASIA</image:title>
<image:caption>I produced this video for the New Americans Campaign during a naturalization workshop in San Francisco, CA. I asked people to pose for portraits taken by photographer Pat Mazzera. Afterward, I asked them why they wanted to become American citizens. Asians are the fastest-growing wave of newcomers to the United States and they were well represented at this event where more than 200 people were seeking free legal counsel. Everyone had an intense desire to vote in the upcoming election, and a determination to give back to the country to the best of their abilities. “In Mongolia,” one aspiring American told me, “our traditional saying is ‘Even a drop of water is helpful for the ocean.’”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Living Outside Tribal Lines Born on a Native American reservation, Sherman Alexie has been navigating the boundaries of American culture in poetry, novels, short stories, screenplays, and even stand-up comedy, for over two decades. Alexie shares his irreverent perspective on contemporary American life, and discusses the challenges of living in two different cultures at the same time. “I know a lot more about being white than you know about being Indian,” Alexie tells Moyers.
